FOCUS: How to join the region’s annual Day of Caring on Nov. 18

By Amanda Netsch, Trident United Way | Every fall, Trident United Way hosts its annual Day of Caring. It’s a community service day where thousands of volunteers from local businesses, civic groups and associations, in tandem with their colleagues and bosses, roll up their sleeves and get to work serving hundreds of nonprofit agencies and public schools.

Volunteers can be seen building, planting, cleaning, painting, reading and so much more. The impact volunteers make on the community through this one day is well over $400,000 in value of service hours alone (using the Corporation for National & Community Service 2014 volunteer rate) – but the impact does not stop there.

Bruce Jayne, Charleston: “I fully concur that a two-year period of some form of national service would be an exceedingly valuable experience for young Americans, giving them a sense of ownership of our nation and an opportunity to rub shoulders with other young people from diverse backgrounds. ” Two other letters in this section too.

REVIEW: Seinfeldia

REVIEW: Seinfeldia

Reviewed by Darryl Woods: The conceit of this nonfiction book about the hit 90’s sitcom Seinfeld is that Larry David, Jerry Seinfeld and the writers of the show were able to create a strange cross-dimensional plateau where the lines between real lives and fictional characters meet and those lines become blurred.

RENTIERS: An evening that changed my perspective

RENTIERS: An evening that changed my perspective

By Michael Rentiers, special to Statehouse Report | Something happened to me recently that helped bring home a problem in our society. A problem that I believe is exacerbated in our digital lives. It dovetails on a blog Wesley [Donehue] posted recently called,“How the Internet is Fueling Hate.”

I say it happened to me, but that’s not right. It happened to other people and, for whatever reason, I was there to play a part in it. It was a living nightmare.
