MYSTERY PHOTO:  Old South Carolina church

Here’s an old church somewhere in South Carolina sent in by a reader.  Tell us where and, for bonus points, what its significance is.  Send your best guess to:  editor@charlestoncurrents.com – and please make sure to include your name and hometown.  In the subject line, write: “Mystery Photo guess.”

We thought that with last week’s Photo Essay of Sapelo Island, Ga., more readers would figure out that the mystery was probably close by.  We snapped a sunset photo of shrimp boats along Darien Creek, which is part of the Altamaha River estuary.

Congrats to George Graf of Palmyra, Va., who currently guessed we were on a boat dock off Screven Street in Darien with the U.S. Highway 17 bridge in the background.  Congratulations also to Marnie Huger of Richmond, Va., Bill Segars of Hartsville (and yes, we ate a great meal at Skipper’s Fish Camp); Mark Jefferies of Seattle, Wash.; and Tom Pitchford (we don’t know where you live.)

Graf also wrote:  “According to exploregeorgia.org, On any day of the year, you’ll see a variety of moored pleasure boats and fishing vessels; along the river’s edge.  Darien’s colorful shrimp boat fleet offers a picturesque view to the delight of artists, photographers, and visitors.

“Waterfront Park was once the site of the busiest port on the Southeast coast; in the 19th Century, a steady stream of ships entered the Port of Darien for cargoes of lumber, mostly yellow pine, bound for Europe.  Waterfront Park comes alive with excited crowds lining its docks during Darien’s largest annual festival, The Blessing of the Fleet. Held every April, this three day event honoring Darien’s shrimpers includes kid’s amusement rides, street vendors, food vendors, musical entertainment and fireworks.”
