CALENDAR, May 9+: From launching a book to the Charleston Beer Garden

00_calendarBook launch party:  5 p.m. May 9, Blue Bicycle Books, 420 King Street, Charleston.  The shop will host the Charleston release party for J.R. Thornton’s Beautiful Country, a coming-of-age novel set in modern-day China that’s garnering much praise.

Spring Collectors’ Show and Sale: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., May 14, Treasure Nest Art Gallery, 1055 Johnnie Dodds Blvd., Mount Pleasant.  The gallery will offer a day-long celebration of its artists, who will be available to talk about their work at this annual event.  More:  www.treasurenestartgallery.com

(NEW) Charleston Beer Garden:  Noon to 7 p.m., May 14, The Grove at Patriots Point, Mount Pleasant.  This fundraiser for Lowcountry AIDS Services will feature 20 breweries as well as food vendors, beer games and great music.   Tickets are $25 in advance; $32 at the door. (NEW) Cycling in Charleston:  6 p.m., May 24, auditorium, Main Library, Calhoun Street, Charleston.  Historian Nic Butler will outline how cycling in Charleston surged during the Great Depression and how baby-boomers drove the post-war market to new heights in the 1950s.

Gibbes Museum to reopen: May 28. After being shut for months, the art museum on Meeting Street in Charleston will reopen to showcase a $13.5 million renovation expected to improve experiences by visitors. More.

Bird walks: 8:30 a.m. to noon, every Wednesday and Saturday. This is the time of year that a great variety of migrating birds fly through the Lowcountry so what better time to take part in one of the regular early morning bird walks at Caw Caw Interpretive Center in Ravenel. Pre-registration is suggested. Cost is $10. Walks also are conducted on James Island and Folly Beach. Learn more online.
