This beautiful sunset could be almost anywhere, but look closely and it might look familiar. Where is it? Send your best guess to: editor@charlestoncurrents.com – and please make sure to include your name and hometown. In the subject line, write: “Mystery Photo guess.”
Only two photo sleuths correctly identified the chandelier from the last issue as being one of three in the atrium of the Tom Bradley Wing of the Richard J. Riordan Los Angeles Central Library in downtown Los Angeles. Hats off to Charlie Morrison of James Island and George Graf of Palmyra, Va., for sending us the correct answer.
Graf sent along a little extra info: “According to lapl.org, there are three chandeliers created by Therman Statom hanging in the L.A. Central Library. They are commissioned works made of aluminum and fiberglass and weigh 1,750 pounds each. The first chandelier references nature with, among other things, a bird, a flower, a ladybug and an egg. Therman Statom is one of the major figures of the late 20th century Studio Glass Movement. Statom’s chandeliers are atypical of his work because, although proposed with glass components, they were executed in lighter, matte-surfaced materials due to the weight issue. The Tom Bradley Wing contains a number of art projects commissioned as part of the city’s percent for art program administered by the Department of Cultural Affairs. The wing is an elongated rectangle that fills the entire eastern portion of the library site.”
Send us a mystery: If you have a photo that you believe will stump readers, send it along (but make sure to tell us what it is because it may stump us too!) Send it along to editor@charlestoncurrents.com.
