Distinguished fall speakers: Two more accomplished speakers will speak at the S.C. Society Hall, 72 Meeting Street, Charleston, in the fall as part of the Drayton Hall Distinguished Speakers Series. On Oct. 20, curator William M. Kelso of Historic Jamestowne will discuss “The Buried Truth” at the Virginia attraction. On Nov. 17, historian David S. Shields of the University of South Carolina will discuss “Creating the World Orchard.” Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with presentations an hour later. Free.

(NEW) 7th annual Charleston Jazz Jam: 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., Oct. 23, Dock House on Bowen’s Island near Folly Beach. Nationally-known saxophonist Richie Cole will make a special guest appearance at this unscripted, unrehearsed four-hour live jazz concert that will feature over 50 of the greatest jazz musicians in Charleston. Litter cleanup: Nov. 5, across Charleston County. Adopt-A-Highway will hold its next litter cleanup on county roadsides on Nov. 5, with a bad weather date for the following Saturday. Volunteers can pick up supplies on Nov. 2 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at S.C. Department of Transportation’s Charleston Maintenance facility, 2401 Maintenance Way, North Charleston. This is the time of year that a great variety of migrating birds fly through the Lowcountry so what better time to take part in one of the regular early morning bird walks at Caw Caw Interpretive Center in Ravenel.
