You’ll find this address plate in front of a house somewhere in Charleston, but where? Send your best guess for this photo by Michael Kaynard to: editor@charlestoncurrents.com — and make sure to include the name of the town in which you live.
Lots of people knew of the railroad bridge that crosses a tidal creek in Red Top south of Charleston along U.S. Highway 17. Most folks say the bridge is over Rantowle’s Creek, although maps indicate that Wallace Creek joins with Rantowle’s Creek just west of the bridge to form the Wallace River.
George Graf of Palmyra, Va., found information that it is a “lift-bridge carrying the mainline of CSX railroad over Wallace Creek, a tidal creek that joins the Stono Rover about 20 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. The bridge was originally constructed to carry two tracks, but the eastern track has been removed. The line is very active with a dozen or more freight and passenger trains per day.”
Regardless of which body of water it goes over, hats off to Graf and all others who identified the bridge: Stephen Yetman of Charleston, Katherine Beard of Camden, and Tom Brown, Fred Sales and Charlie Morrison, all of James Island
