GOOD NEWS: Top student app-developers will split $10,000 in prizes

Staff reports  |  Some $10,000 in awards and scholarships are available to area students from middle school to graduate school in the Charleston Defense Contractors Association’s 6th annual Mobile App Competition.  Applications and associated videos are due by midnight Nov. 21, 2016.   More on the application process.

logo_cdca“The focus of the Mobile App Competition is to stimulate creative thinking and promote the entrepreneurial spirit while offering development support, marketing expertise, mentorship and guidance for the participating students,” according to the CDCA.  “The CDCA Mobile App Competition will accept creative ideas for unique applications that is able to run on Android platforms AND a one-minute video detailing the functions of the application and how it can be utilized by the general public.  The competition will focus on three areas — safety, quality of life and financial.”

Last year’s winner not only won a $3,000 jackpot, but also got a job after winning, CDCA officials noted.  Winners will be announced at a December summit.  More on Facebook.

Flood maps.  This might not be “good news,” but you can find out where your home is on preliminary new flood maps provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency by clicking here.  Charleston County’s Building Inspection Services Department is reviewing the new maps, which provide property owners with up-to-date flood hazard information and should prevent unnecessary insurance purchases, according to the county.  [NOTE:  The website is not the easiest thing to understand.  After you insert an address, make sure you click “view map” to find the map you’re looking for.  Then you’ll have to figure out how to read it!]

First exhibition. Figurative artist Anna Wypych of Poland will hold her first U.S. solo exhibition, “Secret Project,” starting Oct. 7 at Principle Gallery Charleston, 125 Meeting St.  The artist will attend a 5 p.m. reception.  “Her ability to capture her subject’s personality, infuse her own personality and incorporate symbolism in her works is mesmerizing. Autumn on the Ashley.  More than 50 artists will exhibit wood carvings, paintings, textiles, pottery, jewelry, culinary oils and photographs Oct. 8 and 9 during the 9th annual Autumn on the Ashley Crafts Fair at Magnolia Plantation and Gardens.  The free fair opens at 9 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m. each day.
