Our friend Fred Sales of James Island sent along this blue oval as a mystery photo. Is the blue orb an alien spaceship? Nah. But what is it and where? No hints this week … send your best guess to: editor@charlestoncurrents.com — and make sure to include the name of the town in which you live.
Several eagle-eyed readers knew that the mystery in the last issue was taken from a sculpture at Brookgreen Gardens in Georgetown County. Pawleys Island Ross Lenhart identified the globe as a sculpture called “Cycle of Life,” made by Paul Manship. George Graf of Palmyra, Va., added that the bronze armillary sphere includes symbolism of “the signs of the zodiac, the four elements (the wave pattern for water and the flames for fire, for example), and the cycle of life at the base, which includes the man, woman and young boy. A ring of turtles at the bottom represents eternity.”
Others who correctly identified the location of the piece were Joe Mendelsohn and Ron Byrd, both of Charleston, and Chris Brooks of Mount Pleasant.
