The Board of Trustees of the Charleston County Public Library has elected Charleston Currents publisher and businessman Andy Brack to serve as its chairman.
Other officers elected include tax professional Steven Clem of James Island as vice chairman, MUSC program assistant Maya Hollinshead of North Charleston to remain as secretary and retired Illinois library director Susan Strunk of West Ashley to serve as treasurer. Officer terms begin July 1 and run through June 30, 2017.
“I’m honored to have been selected to chair the board and excited about working with the board and the library’s professional staff to build an even better library system for the people of Charleston County,” Brack said. “Not only will we be bringing on a new director in the next few weeks, but we’re pushing forward in our $108.5 million voter-approved program to build two new library branches, replace three branches, renovate 13 existing locations and relocate support services to free up space in the Main Library.”
Brack praised the dynamic leadership of outgoing chair Janet Segal of West Ashley, who will remain on the board until December. She has chaired the board since 2010.
“Janet has been the driving force in our county for modernizing our public libraries,” he said. “Everybody in the county should be grateful for her long hours of work and dedication. We look forward to continuing to work with her to keep our libraries as the community’s center of lifelong learning.”
Brack, a communications strategist, is publisher of Statehouse Report and Charleston Currents, a local weekly website of good news. He also is president and chairman of the Center for a Better South, a regional think tank. He and his family live in West Ashley.
