Happy Independence Day.  But after all of the fireworks, there are a host of other stellar events scheduled throughout the month:

(NEW) Holy City art show:  Through July 17, 414 King St., Charleston.  The Passages Artists Collection presents Holy City: Art of Love, Unity and Resurrection, an art show of works born out of the raw emotion in the hours following the Emanuel AME Church tragedy.  You can use the gallery as a sanctuary, according to promotional material.

(NEW) Charleston history lectures:  You can attend any of three history lectures about Charleston that are slated to be held at public libraries:

  • Robert Smalls: Gullah Statesman, Hurd/St. Andrews Regional Library, July 6 at 1 p.m.
  • The Forgotten Pleasure Gardens of Charleston, Main Library, July 20 at 6 p.m.
  • Colonial Lake: A Brief History, Main Library, July 28 at 6 p.m.

Yappy Hour:  4 p.m. to 8 p.m., July 7, James Island County Park, James Island.  Dogs and their owners can have fun at the park with other pets.  Music and beverages will be available during the off-leash dog park event.  Cost is free with gate admission ($2 per person).  Other Yappy Hours will be on Aug. 4, Sept. 15 and Oct. 13.  More info.

Reggae Nights concert with Selah Dubb:  8:30 p.m., July 8, James Island County Park, James Island.  Gates open at 7:30 p.m. for music by Selah Dubb, a trio formed more than 20 years ago that brings a high-energy vibe with modern surf-reggae-rock music.  Tickets are $10 per person at the gate.  Gold Pass holders and kids under 13 are free.  More info.

(NEW) Hawkeye talk:  5:30 p.m., July 12, Blue Bicycle Books, 420 King St., Charleston.  Meet Timber Hawkeye, bestselling author of Faithfully Religionless and Buddhist Boot Camp, during his book tour of bookstores, churches and yoga studios.  His new memoir is about discovering the differences between emotions and feelings, truth and fact and other benefits of mindful living.

Bird walks: 8:30 a.m. to noon, every Wednesday and Saturday. This is the time of year that a great variety of migrating birds fly through the Lowcountry so what better time to take part in one of the regular early morning bird walks at Caw Caw Interpretive Center in Ravenel. Pre-registration is suggested. Cost is $10. Walks also are conducted on James Island and Folly Beach. Learn more online.

If you have an event to list on our calendar, please send it to editor@charlestoncurrents.com for consideration.  The calendar is updated weekly on Mondays.
