Staff reports | Learn about Olympic athletes throughout July and win prizes with this year’s Book On Downtown scavenger hunt.
up a scorecard at any Charleston County Public Library branch or download a scorecard here, then enter the names of the athletes featured on the Book On Library posters displayed at various businesses in downtown Charleston.
Cards must be turned in at a branch library by July 31. Multiple prizes will be awarded, with one lucky winner receiving the top prize of $100 provided by the Charleston Friends of the Library. Prizes will be awarded by random drawing of submitted answer cards with the most correct answers.

McDaniel awarded. Hats off to George W. McDaniel, the former executive of Drayton Hall who last month received the Governor’s Award in Historic Preservation. “George McDaniel’s influence can be found on preservation projects all across the Lowcountry and the nation,” said Anthony C. Wood, former chair of Drayton Hall’s site advisory council. “He has helped teach and mentor the next generation of preservationists and has helped put in place policies that will continue to protect resources in perpetuity.”
Riley elected. Joe Riley III has been elected president-elect of the state chapter of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors for 2016-17. Founded in 1935, NAIFA-SC says it is the leading professional organization for insurance agents and financial advisors in the state.
Moore recognized. The American Society of Landscape Architects will honor South Carolina philanthropist Darla Moore at its 2016 annual meeting in October in New Orleans for valuing “the profession of landscape architecture for the transformative power landscape can play in the life of a community. She has used her wealth to start Moore Farms Botanical Garden at her family farm outside Lake City, South Carolina, which is dedicated to preserving native plants and education on how these plants can be utilized by the landscape industry. She also founded the Charleston Parks Conservancy in Charleston, South Carolina, which has elevated the level of the city’s parks.”
Enrollment open. If you live in the 29405 zip code in North Charleston, you can enroll in Begin With Books, a volunteer program that is an affiliate of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. The program provides a free monthly book to parents to read to their young children. The program, started six years ago, has increased its enrollment over the last year to 3,141 children, up from 2,453 last year.
