FEEDBACK: Roads illustrate need for gas tax

FEEDBACK: Roads illustrate need for gas tax

David Brown: In my opinion, it is difficult to find a more perfect example than the need to fund repair of our roads via the gas tax option rather than through the general revenue option. The reasoning unfolds likes this: The roads need fixing.

FOCUS: Future bright for Volvo, Charleston

FOCUS: Future bright for Volvo, Charleston

By Kyra Morris, contributing editor | In May of 2015, Volvo chose South Carolina to build its first plant in North America. Volvo will build its factory on a 2,800-acre parcel of the Camp Hall Industrial Campus near Ridgeville in Berkeley County. It will be a 575-acre first phase development with an initial 2,000-worker assembly plant. Volvo’s investment for its American presence in our home state will begin at $500 million.

Why Ridgeville? Ridgeville is a small town with a population of approximately 2,000 people who live 12 miles northwest of Summerville. Ridgeville is also 30 miles from a thriving port that currently exports more than 800 BMWs a day. The proximity to a vital port that provides access overseas is a very important factor for Volvo.

BRACK: We’re surrounded by rules — which may not be a bad thing

By Andy Brack, editor and publisher | We’re surrounded by rules. They’re what make the world go round without everybody stepping all over everybody else.

Some rules are overt: Speed limits, no murdering others, pay taxes, don’t hit your little sister. Some of them are more covert: You don’t tell the lady next to you at church that her dress or hairstyle is horrible. You don’t laugh out loud when some guy says something monumentally stupid.

The attraction, which is attracting more visitors than ever, has more than a half million azaleas on its grounds, according to director Tom Johnson.

PALMETTO POEM: Charcoal

PALMETTO POEM: Charcoal

Palmetto Poem by Vera Gómez

Charcoal can be found almost anywhere
there has been fire. Among the ash,
dust to dust, among the embers set aglow.
Almost anywhere: in the streak
of teared-lace mascara, in the remnant
of a striked match, in the man cremated.

GOOD NEWS: Bike lane test is underway

GOOD NEWS: Bike lane test is underway

If you haven’t been to downtown Charleston lately from West Ashley, you’ll soon find out that the roadway looks a little different. Instead of four lanes of vehicles crossing the Ashley River into Charleston, there are now three. The outside lane has been partitioned into a walk/bike lane to test how traffic will react. Also: two winners, a scholarship, water parks and a new film.
