FEEDBACK: Roads illustrate need for gas tax

To the editor:

00_icon_feedbackMy compliments on the pointed message of your March 28 editorial (“Lawmakers need courage to move state forward).

In my opinion, it is difficult to find a more perfect example than the need to fund repair of our roads via the gas tax option rather than through the general revenue option.  The reasoning unfolds likes this:  The roads need fixing.

The fairest way to fund these repairs is via a user tax (i.e., those who use the roads the most should pay the most.)  The most effective method of collecting a user tax is via a gas tax.  (A bonus is that out of state drivers driving through the state will help fund our roads.)

A gas tax, unlike the general funds option, provides a consistent source of funding for not only our immediate road repair needs but for future needs as well.  Just seems like a “no brainer.”
