Staff reports | Former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder will deliver a keynote address 3 p.m. Sunday during the 44th annual Martin Luther King Tri-County Ecumenical Service, which will be at Morris Street Baptist Church, 25 Morris Street, in Charleston. It’s one of several events scheduled through Jan. 19 in South Carolina’s largest annual tribute to King, an event coordinated by the YWCA of Charleston.
Holder, currently a partner with Covington and Burling law firm in Washington, D.C., and the Rev. Joseph A. Darby of Charleston, the presiding elder of the Beaufort District of the AME Church, each will be presented with the Harvey Gantt Triumph Award by U.S. Rep. James Clyburn. He also will lead a delegation of U.S. Congressional Black Caucus Institute members who attend the event.
New Mayor John Tecklenburg and former Mayor Joe Riley also will deliver remarks. Also on tap in the week ahead are a Jan. 13 youth summit, a holiday parade and poetry slam on Jan. 18, and a Business and Professional Breakfast on Jan 20 where the keynote speaker is Dr. Dara Richardson Heron, CEO of the YWCA USA. - Admission has been cut in half until January 31 to Magnolia, which features the only camellia collection in South Carolina designated as a garden of excellence by the International Camellia Society.
- Until the end of January, if you adopt a pet from the Charleston Animal Society in North Charleston or Pet Helpers on James Island, you will receive a coupon for one free annual family membership to Magnolia. Third best festival in U.S. The Holiday Festival of Lights at James Island County Park was honored recently as third Best Holiday Festival in the United States by the 10Best Readers’ Choice Award contest! Chosen by readers of USA Today and a panel of experts, the Holiday Festival of Lights was in the running against 19 other holiday-themed festivals of all kinds from throughout the country.
Through the years, more than 4 million people have toured the Holiday Festival of Lights, which is hosted by the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission (CCPRC) at the agency’s James Island County Park. The highlight of the event is a three-mile driving tour through over 750 light displays featuring an estimated two million lights.
