Review: Reunion

Reunion, a novel by Hannah Pittard

Kate Pulaski learns that her estranged father committed suicide as she’s waiting for her flight to take off for Chicago, and while she’s shocked, she doesn’t initially feel emotionally affected. Kate is a formerly successful screenwriter who drifts in a sea of professional uncertainty, financial insecurity and personal infidelity. As she joins her older siblings, half-siblings and her father’s five former wives in Atlanta, Kate struggles to come clean about what’s going on in her life and reconcile the feelings she holds for her father.

Hannah Pittard deftly describes the emotional turmoil and communication struggles between family members forced to interact. This book was difficult to read at times, if only because the characters were each dealing with issues that made me both anxious and hopeful they could be resolved. It’s extremely well-written and a moving narrative about a modern family.
