BRACK: Republicans should work to expand, not restrict, voting

By Andy Brack, editor and publisher  |  Red states like South Carolina face increasing pressure to fiddle with election laws.  They should resist.

But expecting Republican leaders to dial back the rhetoric is hopeful at best, looney at worst.  Why?  Because of this:  “These voter suppression efforts are based on a big lie that the election was stolen,” observed state Rep. Gilda Cobb-Hunter, D-Orangeburg.  “Sadly, I have not heard one Republican elected official at the state or local level here, disavow the lie and admit that Joe Biden won the election fair and square.”

BRACK: Bald power grab could frazzle election process

By Andy Brack, editor and publisher  |  The S.C. Election Commission is facing the possibility of a governing board that’s more partisan and beholden to the legislature after its director suggested pandemic changes to expand access to absentee voting in the November election.

BRACK: Activist high court keeps S.C. election barrier in place

By Andy Brack, editor and publisher  |  So the now-conservative U.S. Supreme Court, whose justices rail about judicial activism, now has butted into South Carolina politics with, you guessed it, activism.

At issue: How to cast ballots safely in November in the Palmetto State.  The S.C. General Assembly recently voted to make it a little easier for state voters to cast ballots early in this coronavirus pandemic year by allowing anyone to vote absentee, thus dropping a list of reasons voters usually have to turn to if they want to vote early.

BRACK: Don’t get conned on postal service, election process

By Andy Brack, editor an publisher  |  Don’t let yourself be conned by the Con Man in Chief:  Postal workers will deliver your mailed-in ballot just fine, thank you very much.

In fact, President Donald Trump, who unpatriotically has been denigrating the U.S. Postal Service, believes in mail-in voting so much that he’s going to vote (wait for it) by mail.

BRACK: State needs more absentee voting

BRACK: State needs more absentee voting

By Andy Brack, editor and publisher   |   In these pandemic times, the state doesn’t want large groups of people to congregate.  Yet it hasn’t expanded rules to allow people who want to shelter in place to vote by absentee ballot on June 9.

This makes absolutely no sense for anyone who has stood in long lines on election day, particularly now that there are more barriers to voting with identification requirements and new electronic machines still unfamiliar to many voters.  More absentee voting would limit human contact — and potentially thwart the spread of coronavirus.

BRACK: 2010s — The General Assembly’s Decade of the Nibble

By Andy Brack, editor and publisher   |  Looking back at the past decade, it’s pretty easy to see what the S.C. General Assembly didn’t do — fix education, fix the tax structure, fix health care and on and on.

But state lawmakers did get some things done in what may become known as the legislature’s Decade of the Nibble.  That’s because each area they focused on was more of what a posh restaurant would call an “amuse bouche” than an entree.

BRACK: Redrawing districts as usual could cripple representative democracy

By Andy Brack, editor and publisher    | The S.C. General Assembly now has a license to steal your vote, courtesy of the U.S. Supreme Court.

In a late June decision that surprised many students of representative democracy, the high court ruled it was perfectly fine for state legislatures to draw election district lines for partisan purposes.
