BRACK: Are smartphones, social media making us dumber?

By Andy Brack, editor and publisher  |   That smartphone in your pocket may be neat and shiny, but it also may be making you dumber.

We love these mobile devices because they allow us to be connected instantly to business and personal emails, cute cat videos, music, the latest news, weather updates and a wealth of data.  There’s more computing power in a smartphone, it is said, than there was in the first rocket that took man to the moon.  Smartphones give us answers to questions we’ve got and connect us to long-lost friends through the power of social media.  They’re so packed with apps and cool things that we often forget they’re also phones.

BRACK: Navigating news in times of scandal and hyperbole

By Andy Brack, editor and publisher | With scandal swirling throughout Washington and more indictments stemming from a corruption probe in Columbia, it is becoming harder to keep up with what’s really happening in government and politics.

Part of the problem is the Internet, which overturned the news apple cart by diversifying and segmenting sources of news into so many streams that it can be difficult to figure out which are credible. There are traditional media – newspapers, magazines, radio and television – which operate under an old model of hiring professionals to report news as they see it and digest information critically to make it understandable.

RENTIERS: An evening that changed my perspective

RENTIERS: An evening that changed my perspective

By Michael Rentiers, special to Statehouse Report | Something happened to me recently that helped bring home a problem in our society. A problem that I believe is exacerbated in our digital lives. It dovetails on a blog Wesley [Donehue] posted recently called,“How the Internet is Fueling Hate.”

I say it happened to me, but that’s not right. It happened to other people and, for whatever reason, I was there to play a part in it. It was a living nightmare.

FOCUS: Virginia nonprofit really wants Murray to visit on Groundhog Day

FOCUS: Virginia nonprofit really wants Murray to visit on Groundhog Day

By Caroline Satchell | When you are a nonprofit nature museum that wants to build a name for itself with limited resources, what do you do? Have one of your animals beg a celebrity to come meet you, of course.

That’s what the Virginia Living Museum (VLM) in Newport News, Va., has done with its groundhog, Chesapeake Chuck. Chuck claims to be the Number One fan of one of Charleston’s celebrity residents – comedian and actor Bill Murray. Chuck has launched a national social media campaign to have Murray join him for Groundhog Day on Feb. 2. To date, the museum’s Bill Murray Facebook posts have reached almost 150,000 people, generated over 4,000 likes and almost 2,000 shares. Comments have come from as far away as Australia. Media have picked up on the story and the Newport News Visitor Center is even helping promote the cause.
