Reggae Nights concert series.  James Island County Park.  Gates open at 7:30 p.m. with performances starting at 8:30 p.m. for this county concert series with Mystic Vibrations, Aug. 4.

(NEW) Stop offshore drilling:  6 p.m., Aug. 7, The Yacht Club at the Charleston Harbor Resort, Mount Pleasant.  Several environmental groups, state Sen. Chip Campsen (R-Mount Pleasant) and other elected officials will meet to discuss the “slippery slope” and what can be done to stop offshore drilling.  RSVP.

John’s Island book sale.  Charleston Friends of the Library will hold a two-day book sale July 28 and 29 at the John’s Island Regional Library, 3531 Maybank Highway, to raise money for the charity.  Paperbacks start at $1 and hardbacks at $3.  There also are lots of other materials, such as DVDs, CDs and children’s books.  The sale starts at 9 a.m. each day and ends in late afternoon.  More:  CharlestonLibraryFriends.org.

Potlikker Papers be discussed. Longtime Charleston Currents friend John T. Edge, director of the Southern Foodways Alliance, will be in the Holy City 5 p.m. June 2 for a discussion of his new book, Potlikker Papers: A Food History of the Modern South. He and Garden & Gun editor David DiBenedetto will discuss the book and how it came to be at a space-limited discussion at the magazine’s offices at the Cigar Factory on East Bay Street.
