GOOD NEWS: Rotary holiday party raises thousands for charity

GOOD NEWS: Rotary holiday party raises thousands for charity

Staff reports  |  Hundreds of merry-makers braved chilly, wet weather Saturday to celebrate the season and raise some money for charity.

The Rotary Club of Charleston’s annual Holiday Parade of Boats Viewing Party went off without a hitch – except that the actual boat parade didn’t happen for the first time because of inclement weather.  That didn’t matter about 400 people who gathered at the Charleston Maritime Center to eat barbecue, quaff beverages, listen to good music and enjoy a visit from Santa.  The annual event, now in its fifth year, raised thousands of dollars for the club’s charity fund, which offers grants to local organizations throughout the year for special projects.

FOCUS: Magnolia Gardens to host Friday evening of culture, African food

By Herb Frazier, special to Charleston Currents  |  A West African chef, a historian who sleeps where the enslaved slept and a global connector who invites strangers to dinner will create “The Transformation Experience” at Magnolia Plantation and Gardens.

On March 2, the veranda of Magnolia’s main house will be the setting for a dinner to raise awareness that historians, educators and tour guides should not just tell the story of plantation owners. That narrative, however, must also include the influence enslaved Africans had on America’s economy and culture.

GOOD NEWS: Magnolia offers holiday food drive to help feed S.C. families

Staff reports  |  For the sixth consecutive year, Magnolia Plantation and Gardens is collecting food for the Lowcountry Food Bank, which serves 10 counties in coastal South Carolina. Since 2012 Magnolia’s guests have donated more than 15 tons of food that has benefited families in the food bank’s service area. The food drive began Nov. 1.

“I am challenging other tourism-related businesses like Magnolia to support food drives of their own to help needy families during the holiday season,” said Tom Johnson, executive director of the attraction.
