REVIEW: The Couple Next Door

The Couple Next Door (2016) is Shari Lapena’s first foray into the thriller genre and it is a winner. Anne and Marco Conti are good friends with their next-door neighbors, Cynthia and Graham. A dinner party planned for Cynthia’s house is in jeopardy because the Conti’s babysitter called off. Marco talks his wife into leaving the six-month old home alone, provided they check on her every 30 minutes. Anne is reluctant, but agrees. All is well until they decide to go home around 1:00 am and find the front door ajar and the baby gone.

GOOD NEWS: Officials break ground for new James Island library

Staff reports | A new 20,000 square foot library on James Island should open by the end of 2018, according to library and county officials who kicked off construction of the facility at a Friday groundbreaking.

In related news, county officials last week gave the O.K. to designers and builders to move forward with a new library to replace the Cooper River Memorial Library in North Charleston.

GOOD NEWS: Star Wars Reads Day to launch Oct. 7

Staff reports | One of the most fun-filled days at Charleston County Public Library’s main library is just a few days away – Star Wars Reads Day is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 7. Also, you can see one of two Star Wars movies starting at 2 p.m.

Dress up your kids (or yourself) in your favorite Star Wars costume and join more than 1,500 people in an event that continues to grow in size and entertainment value. You might not think about your library doing this kind of thing, but if you visit, you’ll see lots of happy people (and some Stormtroopers), library officials say.

GOOD NEWS: Carolina Youth Development Center wins national accreditation

Staff reports | Carolina Youth Development Center (CYDC) has achieved national accreditation through the New York-based Council on Accreditation (COA).

CYDC is a nonprofit serving Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties that provides shelter and support services to child victims of abuse and neglect, as well as youth mentoring programs and a community-based prevention program that helps at-risk families access the resources they need to stay together.

GOOD NEWS: Food Bank gets $82,500 grant to help seniors

Staff reports | The Lowcountry Food Bank will get an $82,500 grant to support the food bank’s senior meals. It’s one of 12 grants awarded nationally by . The grant is one of twelve awarded by Feeding America, a national network of food banks, and is made possible by funding from the Enterprise Rent-A-Car Foundation.

GOOD NEWS: Library makes progress on new Bees Ferry branch

GOOD NEWS: Airport experiences 6.2 percent passenger growth

Staff reports | Charleston International Airport had 7 percent more people heading to one of 18 non-stop destinations in the first four months of the year, compared to last year in what is a traditionally slower traveling season. In the same period, 5.6 percent more people flew into the airport.

GOOD NEWS: Wentworth collaborates in new national book of poetry

Staff reports | Charleston Currents contributing editor and South Carolina Poet Laureate Marjory Wentworth’s work is getting attention in a new national book that targets middle-school children to open their eyes to the joys of poetry. Out of Wonder: Poems Celebrating Poets is a collection of original poems by Newbery Medal–winning author and poet Kwame Alexander, along with poems by teacher-poet Chris Colderley and Wentworth.

GOOD NEWS: Veterans get hunger relief help, more

Staff reports | Soldiers’ Angels Hunger Relief Program on Friday hosted a Veteran Mobile Food Distribution in the Hagood Stadium parking lot of The Citadel to help provide food assistance to more than 200 low-income, at-risk and homeless veterans from the Charleston-Area. The distribution was conducted in partnership with The Citadel and the Lowcountry Food Bank.
