NEWS BRIEFS: Statehouse will be different for Dems in 2021

By Andy Brack  |  The $200 million spent in South Carolina on the U.S. Senate race between Republican Lindsey Graham and Democratic challenger Jaime Harrison sucked the oxygen out of down-ballot Democratic campaigns. “Nationalizing the election just killed down-ballot races,” said one key Statehouse insider who asked not to be named.

BRACK: Dems might screw up chance to beat tower of jelly

BRACK: Dems might screw up chance to beat tower of jelly

By Andy Brack, editor and publisher  | Democrats better watch it or they will screw up a huge opportunity to retake the White House in 2020.

With all of the toils and troubles of incumbent President Donald Triump — the lies, the mobster culture, the scandals, the Mueller investigation, the misogyny, the drama, the incessant twittering, the blatant corruption, the continuing attacks on the foundation of our democracy — one might think he would be easy political pickings.  But with a solid electoral base of about 40 percent, all that Trump has to do to win in 2020 is prey on fear to pick up 10 percent and fuel dissent about Democrats. Scary.

BRACK:  Dems got better news in special elections than people might think

By Andy Brack, editor and publisher  |   Boy, listening to the talking heads and sputtering pundits, you’d almost think the world was ending for Democrats after narrow losses in two special U.S. House elections in South Carolina and Georgia.

But the world’s not ending.  In fact, Republicans should be a little worried.

Yes, the Democrats lost again.  But they lost in safe, strong GOP districts  – contests for which most people never thought Democrats could get so close.

FEEDBACK: Dems need to show up for special elections

Agnes Pomato, Wadmalaw Island: “I agree wholeheartedly that this is the time for Democrats to win in South Carolina. Everything you listed is true. But one of the most important things is to make voters aware of the candidates and the dates. We have a special election coming up in the 5th Congressional District to fill Mick Mulvaney’s vacated House seat. “

BRACK: How can S.C. Democrats start winning more?

BRACK: How can S.C. Democrats start winning more?

By Andy Brack, editor and publisher | With strings of losses in statewide contests over the last few years, you’d think South Carolina Democrats would be down and out. But with President Donald Trump irritating people left and right, there’s a growing enthusiasm that maybe Democrats can take advantage of new cards being dealt them.

To do so, they’re going to have to be disciplined, raise money, create a more appealing message and target sympathetic voters. And, as one longtime insider notes, they’ll have to have some pretty good luck. But the conditions in reliably red South Carolina are bubbling for Democrats at the state level to have a little more success.
