FOCUS: Conservancy launches April litter cleanup program

Staff reports | The Charleston Parks Conservancy is launching a volunteer litter cleanup program in April to remove trash from the West Ashley Greenway and Bikeway.

“After conducting a community survey about the West Ashley Greenway and Bikeway, it was clear that litter is a big concern,” said Rachel Barry, volunteer manager for the Conservancy. “We are excited to give the community an opportunity to join us in cleaning up the trails and making them more enjoyable for everyone.”

The organization will give away 100 cleanup kits with bags, gloves, safety vests and trash pickers for volunteers to use in its Cleanup in the Parks effort to remove trash from any local park or public greenspace, according to a press release

GOOD NEWS: Big bucks awarded for No Kill South Carolina

Staff reports | The Petco Foundation on Saturday awarded a $400,000 grant to the Charleston Animal Society to fund the organization’s effort to try to save every healthy and treatable animal in the Palmetto State.

The funding by the Petco Foundation, which help the Charleston Animal Society launch the No Kill South Carolina (NKSC) program earlier, will help it bring together 350 rescue organizations across South Carolina with funding over the next two years.

GOOD NEWS: Gardens yield a ton of produce

The Charleston Parks Conservancy’s Magnolia Community Garden, Elliotborough Community Garden and Medway Community Garden generated 2,039 pounds of produce in 2015 for donation to local food pantries, such as Lowcountry Food Bank, One80 Place and James Island Outreach.

GOOD NEWS: On poverty, Gibbes’ prize, Conservancy

Staff reports | The South isn’t as mired in poverty as it once was, according to a new report, and South Carolina is no exception. But in many places in the Palmetto State, things still aren’t that great.

Before President Lyndon Johnson launched his War on Poverty campaign, the South was home to 49 percent of the nation’s poor, according to Pew Research. Today, the region is home to 41 percent of the nation’s poor. But what’s striking is how poverty overall is far different throughout the South.
