NEWS: Charleston Currents publisher picked to lead library board

The Board of Trustees of the Charleston County Public Library has elected Charleston Currents publisher and businessman Andy Brack to serve as its chairman.

Other officers elected include tax professional Steven Clem of James Island as vice chairman, MUSC program assistant Maya Hollinshead of North Charleston to remain as secretary and retired Illinois library director Susan Strunk of West Ashley to serve as treasurer. Officer terms begin July 1 and run through June 30, 2017.

The joyful sounds of the Imani Milele Children’s Choir from Uganda filled the air last week as officials renamed the St. Andrews Regional Library in West Ashley after the late librarian Cynthia Graham Hurd, who died in the Emanuel AME Church massacre last year. The event, held on what would have been Hurd’s birthday, brought tears to some, but the children’s choir’s sounds brought smiles and delight to those who attended.

Chicago-area storyteller Oba William King enthralled crowds Friday and Saturday at the fourth annual Charleston Tells festival put on by the Charleston County Public Library. Hundreds of children and adults packed tents and rooms to hear stories at dozens of performances of nationally-known and local artists with gifts for words and spinning good yarns.
