Staff reports | The Charleston County Public Library (CCPL) is celebrating writing this week through Aug. 4 with the Write On! Literacy Festival with talks with authors, workshops and other writing activities.
On July 28, the festival included the first OtrantoCon 2018, a free event for all ages who love anime, comics, science, fiction, fantasy and cosplay, at the Otranto Road Regional Branch.

Staff reports | Owlbert, the mascot for Charleston County Public Library, will unveil a new book, “Owlbert Finds a Home” during a special storytime event 10:30 a.m. June 14 in the Main Library’s children’s area.
The fun story, which was written and illustrated by library staff members, explains how Owlbert ended up living at the library and becoming its mascot. On Thursday it will be read aloud by the story’s illustrator, Liz Wuestefeld.
Staff reports | The Charleston County Public Library (CCPL) will host a community meeting 7 p.m. June 12 to show updated designs for the new St. Paul’s Branch library. The meeting will be in the cafeteria of the E.B. Ellington Elementary School, 55444 Old Jacksonboro Road, Ravenel.

Staff reports | Charleston County Public Library this week will kick off its 2017 Summer Reading Programs, which run from June 1 through July 31 and feature hundreds of free events and fun prizes for participants of all ages.
Pre-registration is already underway, and the library offers programs designed for the following age groups:
A novel by Charles Martin: This book looks at how different people react to tragedies in their lives, yet it is very uplifting. A man who has an unexplained tragedy in his past meets a 7-year-old girl who is living a tragedy in her life now. However, the author makes us love these characters and ultimately come to root for them.
Fiction by David Mitchell: Slade House: A Novel is a follow-up to the 2014 novel, The Bone Clocks, and exists in the same magically realistic world. It is not necessary to have read the previous book because Slade House is neither a sequel nor prequel but simply tangential to the original story. — Reviewed by Kathy Sanders.
