By Mary Ross McQuage, contributing editor | The South Carolina chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association on September 11 will host the 14th Annual Educational Workshop entitled “Putting the Pieces Together.” The program will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with lunch provided, at College Center, Trident Technical College Main Campus, at 7000 Rivers Avenue in North Charleston, SC.

By Mary Ross McQuage | At least once a week as I am providing guidance and referrals to families making plans for their elderly loved ones, I have to break the news that Medicare is not going to pay for their long-term care needs, either in a nursing home or at home. Many people assume that Medicare is going to cover all of their needs as they age. The typical response to finding out this is not true is, “Well, what exactly DOES Medicare pay for?”
“When people with dementia has to go to the emergency room, their reactions to the event are often very similar to my daughter’s reactions. Even if people with dementia have been to a particular hospital or emergency room numerous times, each time they may experience it as if it were the first.”
