MYSTERY PHOTO:  Italianate palace outside of the Carolinas

Photo sleuth George Graf of Palmyra, Va., (the state might be a clue) sent in this photo of an Italianate mansion for readers to identify.  Give it your best shot.  (We had never heard of the place.)  Send your best guess to:  editor@charlestoncurrents.com — and make sure to include the name of the town in which you live.

Last week’s Mystery Photo of two boats was tough, especially for out-of-towners, but Graf and others correctly identified it as being two sailboats, one of which was beached in the marsh along the Ashley River near Albemarle Point at the Wappoo Cut.  Hats off also to Martha C. Craft-Essig of Johns Island, Legare Clement of Charleston and Chris Brooks of Mount Pleasant, who figured out the location based on the ripped rigging from the beached sailboat, which can be spotted from the James Island Expressway.
