MYSTERY: What kind of bird is this?

Since this issue of Charleston Currents seems to be all about birds, we thought it might be fun for the Mystery Photo to be a bird to.  What kind of bird is this?  Send your best guess to:  editor@charlestoncurrents.com — and make sure to include the name of the town in which you live.

Last week’s Mystery Photo of 14 bunnies stumped veteran guesser Chris Brooks of Mount Pleasant, who cleverly quipped, “Rabbits multiply so fast – two weeks ago there were only two!”  But the challenge didn’t thwart two intrepid readers – Susan Frohnsdorff of Charleston and George Graf of Palmyra, Va., both of whom guessed the photo by Deborah Getter of John’s Island was Bunnyhenge in Newport Beach, Calif.  Noted Graf:

“The custom-manufactured rabbits remained wrapped in packing material for months, puzzling many locals. Then, one day, the chalky white figures were revealed, providing immediate fodder for politicians and locals.  Bunnyhenge is actually not considered art, but instead considered something for kids. Sixteen large concrete bunnies are located within the park. Fourteen are in the three to four foot range and are situated in a circle facing inward towards each other. They are designed to encourage children to climb and sit upon them.  There are also two eight foot bunnies located in other parts of the park.  Bunnyhenge came with a price tag of $221,000.  This sculpture is part of a rotating temporary art exhibit in Civic Center park and will be replaced in 2017 with a new sculpture. That means this roadside attraction’s days are numbered.”
