GOOD NEWS: Seats going fast for Charleston Stage’s “White Christmas”

A heartwarming musical adaptation of “White Christmas,” based on the classic film featuring 17 Irving Berlin hit songs, follows the romantic and hilarious adventures of Veterans Bob Wallace and Phil Davis who have a successful song-and-dance act after World War II.

00_icon_newsbriefsWith romance in mind, the two follow a duo of beautiful singing sisters en route to their Christmas show at a Vermont lodge, which just happens to be owned by Bob and Phil’s former army commander. The beloved score features well known standards including “Blue Skies,” “I Love a Piano,” “How Deep Is the Ocean” and the perennial favorite, “White Christmas.” With an array of over 200 stunning costumes and 9 dazzling sets, White Christmas is an uplifting and delightful way to spend your holiday season.

The show opens Nov. 30 and runs Thursdays through Sundays from Dec. 2 to Dec. 18.  Tickets are $31 to 68 for adults and going fast, according to Charleston Stage.  Learn more here.

Nuncrackers.  The Footlight Players will offer “Nuncrackers: The Nunsense Christmas Musical: from Dec. 2-18 at the Footlight stage, 20 Queen St., Charleston.  Tickets range from $15 for children to $35 for adults.  More.

Underneath the Lintel:  PURE Theatre will offer “Underneath the Lintel” as its holiday production in lieu of another production.  The story:  “Underneath the Lintel tells the gripping story an eccentric librarian who discovers a weather-beaten book in the overnight return box — 113 years overdue. Sparked by a message left in its margins, he, in spite of the fact that he never left his native town of Hoofddorp, embarks on a magical quest that takes him around the world and 2,000 years into the past.”  This holiday performance will open Dec. 9 and run through Dec. 23 at the company’s stage, 477 King Street, Charleston.  Tickets are $25 for adults.  More.

2016 Angels.  Hats off to the Lowcountry Food Bank for being named one of the state’s 10 “Angels” by Secretary of State Mark Hammond.  According to Hammond, the organization spent 97.7 percent of its expenditures toward delivering programming services.  The other area organization recognized was Summerville’s International Primate Protection League, which spent 83.9 percent of its money on programming.  More.

Big grant.  Congratulations to Charleston Southern University, which won a $2.25 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to introduce new best practice instructional models for distance and blended education to better serve students.

Blizzard exhibit.  Just in time for cold weather, The Charleston Museum will offer a photographic exhibit, “Snow Days in Charleston: The Great Blizzard of 1899” from Dec. 1, 2016, to April 2, 2017.  Click here to see a couple of images.
