GOOD NEWS: Statue to be erected of Hollings

Staff reports  |  Our sister publication, Statehouse Report, exclusively reported Friday that supporters and friends of retired U.S. Sen. Fritz Hollings are planning to unveil a full-sized bronze statue in his honor in the spring.

The $150,000 statue will be placed in the garden outside a federal courthouse annex once named for Hollings.  It was renamed last year, after a unique request by Hollings, as the J. Waties Waring Judicial Center.  It is located next to the federal courthouse on Meeting Street in Charleston at the Four Corners of Law.  To read more of this story, click here.

Library picks new director.  Nicolle Davies, a nationally-recognized library leader who was named Library Journal magazine’s 2016 Librarian of the Year, will be Charleston County Public Library’s new executive director, the library’s Board of Trustees announced last week.  Read the full story here.

Good stat.  Our friends at the Charleston Regional Development Board alerted us to the correct statistic on the number of people who move into the metro area every day.  It’s 35 people.  If you add new babies born in the area, the number of newcomers daily to the area jumps to 48 people.  Good to know.  More.

New performing arts center.  Daniel Island will get a new performing arts space thanks to commitments and pledges totaling $5 million, organizers announced last week.  The 400-seat theatre, rehearsal space, kitchen and community gathering space is expected to become a destination where Broadway-style productions can be staged.

 Greenway pledge.  The Charleston Parks Conservancy has received a $200,000 pledge from The Speedwell Foundation to improve the West Ashley Greenway and the West Ashley Bikeway.  More.
