CALENDAR, June 13+: Book signing, dedication, Carolina Day

00_calendarBook signing:  5 p.m. to 8 p.m., June 16, downtown Summerville.  The Summerville-Dorchester Museum will host writers Bernard Powers, Herb Frazier and Marjory Wentworth as they sign copies of their new “We Are Charleston” book.  It tells the story of the Emanuel Nine tragedy and history of the AME Church.  The signing is part of the community’s “Author Author” event featuring more than a dozen local authors.  More.

Hurd mural dedication:  9 a.m., June 20, John L. Dart Library, 1067 King St., Charleston.  Community leaders will dedicate a bright book-themed mural on the side of the Dart library as a permanent reminder of the commitment to literacy and the community by librarian Cynthia Graham Hurd, one of nine people gunned down last year at Emanuel AME Church.

Carolina Day lecture: 5 p.m., June 28, Heyward-Washington House, 87 Church St., Charleston.  Join Carl Borick, director of The Charleston Museum, for a discussion of the home’s original owner, Thomas Heyward Jr., a signer of the Declaration of Independence.  There will be a tour during this celebration of a 1776 Patriot victory over the British. Reservations are required.

Bird walks: 8:30 a.m. to noon, every Wednesday and Saturday. This is the time of year that a great variety of migrating birds fly through the Lowcountry so what better time to take part in one of the regular early morning bird walks at Caw Caw Interpretive Center in Ravenel. Pre-registration is suggested. Cost is $10. Walks also are conducted on James Island and Folly Beach. Learn more online.

If you have an event to list on our calendar, please send it to editor@charlestoncurrents.com for consideration.  The calendar is updated weekly on Mondays
