CALENDAR, Dec. 28, 2015+ — take a look at several New Year’s events — from polar plunges to parties and more.
This year’s New Year’s Day polar plunges on Sullivan’s Island and Folly Beach will be more like invigorating fall dips in the ocean thanks to mild December temperatures. As many awed residents and visitors remark, who would have thought you could be strolling on the beach in shorts, as this pair is, or grabbing a few rays at this time of the year? Colder weather has got to be on the way, but apparently not anytime soon! Photo by Andy Brack.
Letters for Dec. 28, 2015, issue, include this from Elizabeth Bagby of Charleston: “Overall, I like the new plate with the Anglicized motto. I liked the colors of the previous one better but color costs more, I suppose. This is the fifth plate in +/- 15 years. Why does it keep changing? The single sticker will be nice.”
S.C. Encyclopedia | Joel Roberts Poinsett was born on March 2, 1779, in Charleston, son of the Huguenot physician Elisha Poinsett and his English wife, Ann Roberts. As a child, Poinsett spent six years in England, where his formal education probably began. In 1794 he entered the Greenfield Hill, Connecticut, academy of Dr. Timothy Dwight but stayed only two years because of his frail health. Returning to England, Poinsett attended private school at Wandsworth, where he excelled in languages.
By Kyra Morris, contributing editor | It’s almost January, a time for new beginnings. The holidays are just about over. Now it’s time to pay for the festivities. We often say to ourselves, “I’m going to do it differently this year.” Then we ask ourselves, “Is it worth the effort?” So many resolutions go unresolved and undone. So – can the New Year truly find you a better person.
Prior years’ studies show that around 51 percent of those who make resolutions regarding their finances feel they are better off financially after just one year. That’s over half. The percentages are in your favor. With a little forethought and some self-motivation, you can do it. Identify your goals and desires, and then develop your plan. Your financial resolutions may improve your overall financial health.
By Andy Brack | Too many South Carolinians are dying in traffic wrecks as more state residents take to the road due, in part, to less expensive fuel.
As reported Friday by Statehouse Report, some 930 people died as of Christmas Eve on South Carolina roads in 2015. That’s 133 more people than died in wrecks in 2014 and it’s more than any year since 2007 when 1,077 people died on the state’s highways.
Good news for Dec. 28, 2015: Nice far outweighed naughty in Statehouse Report’s annual list by columnist Andy Brack. On the Nice list: Gov. Nikki Haley and state legislators for finally removing the Confederate flag from Statehouse grounds; former U.S. Sen. Fritz Hollings, Clemson, U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, flood aid workers, the counties in the S.C. Lowcountry Promise Zone, The Post and Courier and former U.S. Rep. Bob Inglis.
